Community Mourns Pontotoc County Woman Killed in Storm

Posted by adminwp | Mobile Home Community | Wednesday 22 February 2012 2:11 am

HAPPYLAND, OK — Weeks before severe season rears its head, the first major storm system of 2012 claimed a life. High winds toppled a mobile home leaving only shreds behind. Machelle Epperly was trapped underneath that home.

“She was pinned underneath. The trailer house had actually flipped upside down,” Pontotoc County Sheriff John Christian explained.

Epperly was the director of public transit in Ada. Christian says her death leaves a hole in the community.

“Michelle was a sweet lady- a good person who did take pride in working in the community and helping others and she will be missed.”

Epperly's husband, 53 year old Rick Epperly was also hurt in the accident. He suffered several broken bones.

Christian said the mobile home was no match for Monday night's winds.

“The National Weather Service was here this morning and actually did a survey of the site. Their determination from what they saw was that is was a straight line wind micro burst that happened in the area with winds- to their calculation- of up to 110 miles per hour,” said Christian.

The sheriff says that in a town like Ada, the community comes together in crisis.

“You'll see an outpouring of compassion and sympathy towards the family and what they're going through at this time,” Christian said.

The Red Cross was on scene almost immediately. Much of the neighborhood seemed to be right behind with help.

Oklahoma Storms Turn Deadly, Cause Damage

Posted by adminwp | Mobile Home Community | Tuesday 21 February 2012 6:06 pm

OKLAHOMA CITY –

One person was killed Monday when strong winds from a fast-moving storm overturned a mobile home in the community of Happyland near Ada.

Another person was critically injured when the mobile home was destroyed. The patient was flown to an Oklahoma City hospital for treatment. Police have not released the names of either victim.

The line of severe storms caused damage to homes and businesses throughout Oklahoma City and its suburbs. Storm victims in Edmond say, in a matter of seconds, poles came crashing to the ground breaking through the windshields of cars at a suburban car dealership. The storms produced hail, rain and 70 mile-per-hour winds.

“I thought it was a tornado, and I might not get out,” Phil Wartley, Edmond Hyundai general sales manager, said.

Fallen poles were scattered across the dealership's parking lot. The storm also damaged several cars. The powerful winds that caused the mess produced tense moments for customers and salesmen at the dealership. Employees say it was just another day at work until glass flew through showroom.

“It was pretty scary,” said Wartley. “High gusts of winds in a matter of 15 seconds. We [were] all kind of running through the hallway in a safe area.”

In south Edmond, debris from the storm could be found along Broadway Extension late Monday.

Strong winds caused some damage at the new Devon Tower as well. Gusty winds caused a crane to shift slightly, breaking a pane of glass on the 32nd floor.

Crews shut down surrounding streets as a precaution. No one was injured.

Ypsilanti Township to seek court help in addressing conditions at three partially abandoned mobile home parks

Posted by adminwp | Mobile Home Community | Tuesday 21 February 2012 6:06 pm

Conditions at three mobile home parks have pushed the properties to the top of the seemingly endless list of blighted structures Ypsilanti Township’s Office of Community Standards is addressing.

A judge recently ordered 14 abandoned mobile homes removed from one park while township staff brought two more parks with similarly bleak and dangerous conditions to the attention of the Township Board of Trustees at the Feb. 13 meeting.

Wasthenaw County Circuit Judge Archie Brown ordered Greenbriar Mobile Home Park owner Gerald Burton to remove the abandoned trailers from the park, located at 2500 Holmes Road between Holmes and East Michigan Avenue, by Feb. 25.

Many of the mobile homes there have been stripped of scrap metal and are providing shelter for vagrants. Doors and windows are broken on units throughout the park, and some face issues ranging from collapsing porches to leaking roofs.

Township attorney Doug Winters also reported to the Board of Trustees that township staff will be addressing similar, if not worse, conditions at two nearby mobile home parks.

The properties are both owned by WOC Realty LLC and are in tax foreclosure. One is at 2590 E. Michigan Ave. and the other is at 117 S. Harris Road, just south of the Ford Boulevard bridge over East Michigan Avenue.

No paperwork has been filed with the courts yet, but the township is drafting notice of violations outlining the issues at the two parks which will eventually be served to the owner.

In an affadavit, Building Director Ron Fulton noted that some of the mobile homes were structurally unsafe and unfit for occupancy. Officials are having trouble determining which mobile homes there are in inhabited and which aren’t because many are in such a degree of disrepair. As with Greenbriar, some units are being stripped of scrap metal.

One unit in particular on the Michigan Avenue property is packed with garbage from floor to ceiling throughout much of the trailer, and garbage was spilling out the front door when building inspectors were at the property.

On Feb. 15, officials received a report that the drinking water at the Michigan Avenue park was contaminated, though officials hadn't yet determined what it was contaminated with.

The township faced similar challenges in the now-razed Ypsilanti Mobile Village, which is also in the same area along the East Michigan Avenue corridor.

The Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth is supposed to oversee licensing of the parks, and Winters expressed frustration with the state for being lax on oversight.

Burton, Greenbriar’s owner, did have his license to operate two other parks stripped by the state. He was also exposed by Fox 2 for failing to make water payments at a building he owned in Detroit. The water was to be shut off because he owed $159,000, and he was suspected of trying to rig the water meter.

Still, he continues to operate Greenbriar.

“What you have here is an absolute failure on the part of the State of Michigan to regulate these mobile home parks. It has been a total abdication at the state level, and it has fallen upon the township to ensure that these mobile home units are habitable, and they’re not,” Winters said.

“The (residents) who actually live there are in imminent danger due to horrible conditions … and they are exposed to a number of health hazards by living in, for lack of a better word, a fire trap.”

The township must ensure residents are safe, and officials aren't specifically targeting mobile home parks, Winters said.

“You can’t sit there and ignore these conditions and say ‘You gotta live somewhere.’ There can’t be a deplorable situation that threatens the health, safety and welfare of people who are exposed to what’s going on at these mobile home parks,” he said.

Pit Bulls Banned, Neighbors upset

Posted by admin | Mobile Home Community | Tuesday 21 February 2012 6:06 pm

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) – -

Some Petersburg residents are gearing up for a “dog fight.” Pit bull owners living in the Green Acres Mobile Home community are being given, what they call, an unfair ultimatum– get rid of your dog or get evicted.

For more than a decade neighbors at the mobile home park have been allowed to have pit bulls on the property — despite signing a lease that says otherwise.

Now, there's new management at the property who's decided to enforce the pit bull ban. Marie Madore adopted her pit bull, Buddy, 10 years ago.

“One of my friends passed away and they were going to put him down so I took him in,” said Madore.

Madore and more than a dozen other pit bull owners living at Green Acres have a tough decision to make — remove the dogs from the property or face eviction.

“I was angry and hurt because I have to explain to my children that we have to get rid of the dog,” said Ariel Lilly.

Management sent letters to pit bull owners on the property stating it's a lease violation to have the animals.

In a rules and regulation policy booklet,  that management says was signed by every tenant,  states management has the right to ban any breed of dog from the community.

“The rules are there are no pit bulls. No dogs over 40 pounds,” said property manager Matt Foster.

Neighbors don't dispute signing a lease banning the animals but say, that portion of the lease agreement wasn't enforced in the past and shouldn't be enforced now.

NBC12 legal analyst Steve Benjamin.

“If a tenant agrees to abide by certain rules then its the right of the landlord to enforce those rules if they decide to,” said Benjamin.

The pit bull owners say they're not giving up their pets or their homes.

David Phillips: “If he wants to take me to court we have to go.”
Nicole Bell: “So you plan to fight?”
David Phillips: “Oh yes.”

The owners have until February 29th to get rid of the pit bulls or find a new place to live. Many of the animal owners say they don't have the financial means to move.

Digital age makes its way into McAllen Classrooms – Video

Posted by admin | Mobile Home Community | Tuesday 21 February 2012 6:32 am

28-11-2011 21:56 In today’s wolrd technology has become a staple for schools, just as important as reading, writing and arithmetic. Children live in a digital age where mobile devices are as necessary as groceries. A small but growing group of educators in the valley is trying to exploit twitter-like technology to enhance their classrooms. Technology is everywhere, touching almost every part of our lives, our communities, our homes. These days, it is also in our schools. A part of everyday learning in the classroom. McAllen Superintendent Dr. James Ponce says his district is doing something many across the nation have not done. The district secured mobile devicesfor all 25000 of it’s students. They’re using ipads and tools like facetime to revolutionize the student teacher learning experience. Children as young as 5 years old are thriving and loving the idea. By January 2012 more than 5 thousand Ipad2′s and more than 4 hundred Ipod touch devices will be in the hands of both teachers and students. It’s an initiative Dr. Ponce says is already increasing student academic achievement and closing the gap for at-risk children. He says the move into the digital world will not only make the students more competitive, but also increase the value of the community of McAllen. Harlingen South High School Geometry and Digital Electronics teacher Brenda Amintrani uses social media to help her students excel inside and outside the classroom. How does she incorporate it?
