Officials passing law to govern RVs in Vernon

Posted by adminwp | RVS | Saturday 31 March 2012 10:58 pm

An ordinance that would amend the town code in regards to storage of recreational vehicles and equipment is currently progressing through the town council.

PHOTO/JESSICA LOPEZ

Attorney Kevin Kelly listens attentively as an audience member steps up.

Just having received its introduction and first reading, the ordinance places restrictions on where recreational vehicles can be parked or stored. Essentially, the town is trying to alleviate problems between neighbors that arise over RVs. Councilman Patrick Rizzuto took up speaking about the issue at the March 26 town council meeting.

“We are providing a homeowner with the opportunity to store one or two [recreational] vehicles on the property,” he said. “We discussed this for quite a while. We are not going to say this is going to resolve all concerns.”

He stated that the ordinance would give the zoning officer more leave in making his own decisions in regards to residents parking recreational vehicles.

Councilman Eddie Dunn questioned whether the ordinance would address abandoned vehicles.

Rizzuto replied that if a vehicle does not have the appropriate documentation, it cannot be stored.

The revised ordinance applies to recreational vehicles such as any trailer, large boat or motorized home. They must be registered with the NJDMV.

According to the proposed ordinance, any recreational vehicle must be stored at the rear of the house or on a side yard, “unless a review by the zoning officer determines there is no suitable storage location in the rear or side yard.” If this is the case, the vehicle may be stored in the front yard in the driveway, provided it does not encroach on the public right of way or is within 10-ft. of the road.

Fire Damages RVs at Fairgrounds

Posted by adminwp | RVS | Sunday 25 March 2012 12:13 pm

FILER Fire damaged two privately owned travel trailers Saturday that were housed in the Open Beef Barn at Twin Falls County Fairgrounds.

The cause of the blaze, reported at 6:40 p.m., was not known Saturday night. A dollar estimate of the loss was not available either, although neither vehicle sustained major damage. The beef barn itself was not affected.

The fire sent up plumes of smoke that caused concern in town before Filer Volunteer Fire Department personnel quickly extinguished the blaze. Four trucks and 16 men from the fire department responded.

Flames jumped from a window of the RV where the fire began, doing slight damage to an adjacent trailer.

We set up lines to protect the other trailers, Chief Bud Compher said. Were going to do an investigation to see what caused it.

The second trailer received slight damage because firefighters didnt have room to get between the two vehicles with hoses. Instead, Compher said they had to attack the flames from above, which took a bit more time.

Fairgrounds Manager John Pitz said its common for people to store their RVs under the beef barns roof beginning in the fall to keep them out of winter weather.

RVs on display at LV Auto Show

The Greater Lehigh Valley Auto Show is in high gear! This year It’s not just cars, SUVs and trucks that will rev your engine . For the first time ever visitors can see recreational vehicles.

Chad Check knows a lot about motor homes.

“This is our Winnebego Vista, it’s a 2012, 35 footer.”

And he should, Check sells them for a living.

“Everything you’ll have in your home, on wheels!”

You could call it an experiment, it’s the first time RVs have been at the Greater Lehigh Valley Auto Show.

“Brought three motor homes here ranging from 25 to 35 feet in length,” explained Check with All Seasons RVs. “And then we brought some travel trailers.”

Two vendors and nearly a dozen campers make up the exhibit. And it’s getting a lot of foot traffic.

“Pretty busy, always have you know people wanting to see what they look like, first timers,” said Ann Bunting with Pocono RV Sales and Service Inc.

5 Best RVs to Buy Used

Posted by admin | RVS | Friday 23 March 2012 7:42 am

Buy used RVs – as opposed to brand new models off the dealership lot – to avoid the immediate depreciation that takes place as soon as the rig drives off (or is towed off) the property. The five best RVs to buy used factor in your travel style, appetite for extras, and willingness to invest in your recreation.

2011 Jayco Eagle Super Lite HT – Fifth Wheel

Assuming that you own a heavy-duty truck with a fifth wheel tow hitch, the 2011 Jayco Eagle Super Lite HT is one of the best RVs for the money. Featuring a dry hitch weight of 1,435 pounds, but still offering a gross vehicle weight rating of 9,950 pounds, there is a lot of room for cargo capacity. Since Jayco’s products are green certified, you know that you will not be breathing toxic fumes from solvents or glues. The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) lists the suggested retail price at $32,120; the average retail price of a slightly used unit is actually $25,010, which makes these used RVs perfect for the budget-conscious consumer hoping to find a late-model fifth wheel without buying current-year models.

1999 Holiday Rambler Imperial Series M-40 WDS – Class A Motorhome

Holiday Rambler has a solid reputation among RV enthusiasts. Having owned a Rambler myself, I can attest to the timeless interior designs and creature comforts that make even a 1999 model a worthy deal. NADA outlines that this model sold – new – for $228,916. Depending on the mileage, wear and tear, and cosmetic appearance, the price for these used RVs now falls between $56,610 and $68,210. Measuring more than 40 feet in length and offering a queen-sized bed in the back, this is a great option for families with children.

2009 Gulf Stream Touring GX 2 – Class C Motorhome

Check out the 2009 Gulf Stream Touring GX 2 via a dealer’s walk-through on YouTube. Note the two slide-outs, which add enormous spaciousness to the otherwise small-looking 28 feet of length. If you are in the market to buy a used RV that gets you to even some more difficult to reach fishing holes, this smaller Class C motorhome is perfect. NADA explains that this Gulf Stream sold new for $96,311; used, it may feature a price tag ranging from $60,400 to $72,770.

2010 Viking M-2485 SST Legend – Pop-Up Camping Trailer

Do not go for the shorter 12-foot version. Opt for the 25.5-foot model instead. You still need to be best friends with your fellow travelers – the 2010 Viking M-2485 SST Legend sleeps eight – with whom you will be in close quarters in spite of the slide-out. When sold new, NADA explains the list price was $11,673. A couple of years later, it still falls between $8,520 and $10,260. Remember that you also need a tow vehicle. Of course, if you have four couples splitting the cost, this may be one of the best RVs to buy used.

Infield, hotels fill up for NASCAR weekend

Posted by adminwp | RVS | Friday 23 March 2012 6:10 am

This year’s spike in gas prices has not deterred racing fans from hauling their RVs to the infield at Auto Club Speedway near Fontana for this weekend’s NASCAR races, a race official said.

“We haven’t seen that, and I can say that confidently because we sold out our infield,” speedway spokesman David Talley said. “We have 2,000 infield spaces for RVs, and that’s a lot of gas.”

The auto races and other festivities of the Auto Club 400 Weekend at the speedway is scheduled to begin Friday. A very pleased Bob Brown of the Ontario Convention and Visitors Bureau said the area’s full-service hotels are booked solid for the weekend.

Auto Club 400 Weekend is the speedway’s sole NASCAR event this year. The Fontana area speedway had previously hosted two races per year, but lost its second race to a Kansas venue after the 2010 season.

Races can attract customers to inland cities, but Fontana city manager Ken Hunt said the loss of the second race and its attendant opportunity for additional sales tax revenue has not, by itself, caused the city to adjust its own financial plans.

But having two races again would be good for the Inland Empire, and Hunt said the recognition that comes with hosting NASCAR races can be as valuable as a weekend or two’s bump in business.

Hunt explained the value of that prestige by recounting a trip he made to New York City to pitch municipal bonds to investors.

“When you’re in New York, they don’t necessarily know about the city of Fontana, but as soon as I put a sign up showing the speedway for the presentation, they know about us,” he said.
