Tense moments for crews at West Valley mobile home blaze

Posted by adminwp | Mobile Home Community | Saturday 19 May 2012 2:11 am

There were some tense moments Friday for firefighters when they rushed to the scene of blaze inside a West Valley City manufactured home community.

West Valley City Fire Battalion Chief Bob Fitzgerald said crews initially feared that two adults and one child were still inside the residence at the Mountain View Mobile Home Park at 2700 W. Parkway Blvd. when the 911 call came in at 10:45 a.m.

“When they arrived they found large volumes of smoke coming from the home. Neighbors stated that they thought the owners were at home at the time, but could not be accounted for,” Fitzgerald said.

Firefighters from both West Valley City and neighboring South Salt Lake fought the flames and entering the smoking home and searching for the occupants. No one was inside, and the blaze was contained to one bedroom. After the fire was out, officials confirmed that the occupants had gone out to shop for groceries.

No injuries were reported, but the fire was blamed for an estimated $30,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

Photo Exhibition Proceeds Help Save Historic Trailer Park

2012-05-17 Willa and David Mamet are presenting a photographic essay of the lives and homes of people in Village Trailer Park, one of two remaining trailer parks in the City of Santa Monica, at Gallery 169, 169 W. Channel Rd. in a special fundraiser on May 19 and 20. A reception for the artists is Saturday, May 19 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Created in 1950, Village Trailer park has retained all of the character defining features of a postwar trailer park and a beautiful community fabric that has evolved over decades. Quaintly tucked in behind hedges on Santa Monica’s east end, one could drive by this historic cultural treasure hundreds of times, yet never know it was there. With its heritage trees, vintage trailers, and serenity of spirit, it is one of Santa Monica’s last truly ‘Bohemian’ neighborhoods. Those that are healthy, care for those that are less so. Due to very low fixed incomes, nearly all current park residents, most of which are seniors, would not be able to afford relocating the trailers they own anywhere in Los Angeles County.

The 3.8 acre parcel with 109 rent controlled trailer pads, is currently zoned for a trailer park and day care center. The current landowner is proposing to move everyone out of the park and develop a few large buildings. If anything other than these two uses is proposed for the site, a zoning change is required. The Santa Monica City Council has 100 percent discretion over whether the proposed zone change is granted.

Willa Mamet is an accomplished fine photographer, adept at capturing not only the image, but the spirit of subjects with her art utilizing Leica M cameras and printing everything by hand. Her photography includes portraiture, performance work, and fine art. She will be presenting her images that capture the eclectic nature of the people, vintage road ready architecture of the ’50s and ’60s, and old school Santa Monica lifestyle of the park.

David Mamet, playwright, essayist, screenwriter and film director, will offer written reflections about the eclectic and tight-knit community of Village Trailer Park based on personal interviews of residents in the park.

Those passionate about protecting the park as an historical landmark and a place for very low income senior citizens to continue living together in community as homeowners may contribute to the Village Trailer Park preservation fund. Municipal attorney: Banning RVs in city would be mistake

Posted by admin | RVS | Wednesday 16 May 2012 11:11 am

Municipal Attorney Daniel Blasdell believes that banning recreational vehicles from city limits is a mistake.

Blasdell discussed the matter with City Council during the Tuesday meeting. He said an ordinance already exists that prohibits any type of vehicles from being parked in front or side yards in all zoned areas.

North Main Street resident Nora Salmen submitted a letter to council earlier this month wishing to have RVs banned because she believes they are “devaluing property and the atmosphere of the whole town.”

Planning Commission Chairman Richard McBane said the matter was discussed in detail at its recent meeting. The matter had been forwarded to the commission by Mayor Dave Spatholt following the May 1 council meeting when Salmen’s letter was read aloud.

“We talked a lot about whether there should be a total ban versus restrictions on whether to park on private property. We were concerned about a need for commercial storage. There are one or two businesses in town that provide storage; that’s something we should probably take into account,” McBane said.

He also said that of the two photographs of RVs Salmen attached with her letter, one was parked on commercial property. The RV was in a parking lot on North Main Street. The other RV was parked in a back yard of a Firestone Avenue property.

McBane then argued that RVs are occasionally parked outside a home in preparation for a trip.

“There are a lot of situations in which people are getting ready to go on a trip. I have a small RV, a pop-up camper, and it might be sitting there a few days before we actually take a trip. There (needs) to be some sort of accommodation for people who may have it on their property for a period of time,” he said.

RVs parked outside are also occasionally those of out-of-town residents visiting family or friends, he added.

During his research of other communities he found that a 1977 ordinance banning RVs in Euclid was overturned by the Ohio Appeals Court.
